       retail landscape of india

Modern/organised Indian retail has clearly moved into a high growth phase touching over 35%. The current business slowdown has curtailed this somewhat and moved it into a much-needed phase of realism leading to consolidation and rationalisation. Some of the positive results include the softening of high and often unviable real estate. Optimistic projections sees organised retailing catapulting from the present 5.9% to 13% of all retail in 2010 ($46bil) – a target likely to be somewhat delayed. We bring to you the Indian Retail Landscape today in painstaking detail in the form of an Indian Retail Database obtained from primary (field surveys) and secondary (research & corporate) data. This includes over 18810 stores (over 536 chains), 4126 markets, 424 malls covering and over 2895 propriety visuals. Our latest addition is retail promoters and key people. Data can be pulled out and filtered by a range of parameters.

       upcoming mall

Inheriting poor infrastructure and haphazard markets, Indians took to 'environment controlled' malls when they were first introduced in 1999 (Crossroads in Mumbai). Soon malls become the byword for modern Indian retailing and developers built them with a vengeance. However, there was a lot of learning to do with facilities, tenant mix, mall management, rentals, etc. Today, there is an over saturation of malls in some areas (Gurgaon) and total absence in others. The economic slow-down and real estate bust of 2008 also put a dampener. However, malls continue to be icons for modern Indian retailing and now are being transplanted in Tier II and III towns. The attached directory tracks the current status of over 50 upcoming malls in India.

       retail map

Modern Indian retail is still concentrated in the metros and major towns. Tier II towns have just started appearing in the modern retailer's horizon. As a result, while some urban areas have reached an over-saturation stage, other areas remain untouched. Retail Map of India gives a cartographic view of retail infrastructure on the ground. This includes markets, malls and catchment areas. Currently the retail maps cover Delhi and Mumbai with more planned.
